During their opening round of bracket play, the Town of Newburgh’s senior girls Little League team beat the Town of Wallkill 7-4 behind Brittany Garcia’s nine strikeouts.
“I was throwing my change up, drop ball and fastball,” said Garcia, who will be a ninth-grader this fall at Newburgh Free Academy.
The win in the first round, played in Cornwall Wednesday, July 3, was followed Friday by a 13-3 victory over Wallkill Area in Otisville. The next morning at home, they beat Monroe-Woodbury 14-2, and now advance to the District 19 championship series this week at home.
Against the Town of Wallkill, Garcia and Gabby Asher scored on double steals in the first inning. Asher would score on a double steal in the third before Newburgh picked up three runs – all scored on errors–in the fourth and led 6-0.
Wallkill cut the lead to 6-2 when Megan Cesca hit a two-run single. Newburgh scored another run on an error in the sixth before Garcia walked two in the top of the seventh and then gave up a two-run single to Tayler King.
